A European commercial egg production farm has completed the installation of an advanced four-tier enriched welfare cage system. The project covers three poultry houses, with a total designed capacity of 30,000 laying hens.
Each poultry house is equipped with a four-tier enriched welfare cage system for 10,000 birds. The installation was completed over a 12-week period while minimizing disruption to the farm’s ongoing operation.
As a poultry farm equipment supplier, the project partner provided a welfare-compliant cage system designed to improve production capability while meeting European animal welfare standards.

Before the retrofit, the farm needed a system that could meet current welfare regulations while preparing for future market requirements.
A poultry farm feasibility study was carried out before the project. The study compared enriched cages, aviary systems and barn systems across welfare outcomes, production efficiency, biosecurity and capital investment. The four-tier enriched cage system was selected as the most suitable solution for this operation.

A poultry ventilation system with zone-specific controls helps maintain suitable air quality at each tier level. This is especially important for multi-tier cage systems, where air distribution must be managed carefully.
The project also includes environmental monitoring sensors at each tier level. These sensors track temperature, humidity, ammonia levels and air velocity. The data is connected to a central control system, which adjusts ventilation rates and other parameters to maintain suitable house conditions.
This was a retrofit project for three existing poultry houses.
The installation required structural modifications to support the four-tier cage systems. The work included reinforced support columns, upgraded electrical systems and enhanced manure handling infrastructure.
The installation team worked across the three houses in phases, completing one poultry house before moving to the next. This phased installation helped the farm maintain partial production during the transition and reduce revenue loss.
